“You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat”

Who can forget Roy Scheider’s famous line from the movie Jaws? This June, the iconic summer thriller turns 50. This got us thinking about boats and boat design, specifically large, luxury boat design. And wow, they sure are big!
The luxury yacht industry is sailing into a period of significant transformation and growth “amid broader global economic shifts and wealth creation patterns” according to Mordor Intellegence.com. The Business Research Company projects the luxury yacht market to grow from “$9.06 billion in 2024 to $9.48 billion in 2025.” Superyacht construction and technological advancements, the expanding number of high-net-worth individuals, and increased spending on recreation and tourism (think yacht charters), are all propelling this industry forward (yachtway.com). “2025 is set to be a record-breaking year with ten yachts exceeding 100 meters [328 feet] in length set to be delivered” (yachtbuyer.com).

From a dedicated medical center, to a missile defense system, to full squash courts, to a concert hall that can fit an entire orchestra, luxury yachts are designed to reflect the personal sensibilities and tastes of their owners. These customized floating palaces rival five-star hotels, private clubs and mega mansions. In terms of design, several trends are making waves in the industry.

Yacht owners and builders alike are focusing on sustainability in both design and operations, according to yatco.com. Solar panels are becoming an integral part of design, powering everything from state-of-the-art entertainment systems to air conditioning and lighting. Environmentally friendly practices and energy-efficient systems -- including hybrid and electric propulsion systems that reduce emissions and vibrations, paints/stains that are safe for marine life, as well as advanced waste management systems that minimize impact on the marine ecosystem -- are leading the push for greener alternatives on the big blue seas. Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 million vessel, Launchpad, features “special systems to clean water before releasing it” and LED lights throughout (deyachting.net).
Today’s luxury yachts are increasingly focused on wellness and lifestyle with onboard spas, yoga studios, mediation spaces, fully equipped fitness centers, Jacuzzis and multiple swimming pools. Eco-friendly natural materials such as bamboo, cork, linen and reclaimed wood create a serene environment and a unique aesthetic. Warm soft tones and earthy colors, a 2025 trend on land, make their way onto the high seas to create organic and calm spaces. Most of the designs feature plenty of windows with panoramic views of the ocean, and lots of light. Blended indoor - outdoor areas allow direct access to the sunshine and water.
Seamless integration of advanced technology systems for navigation, entertainment, security and maintenance enhance efficiency and make for smooth sailing. Integration of AI with GPS and radar technology “ensures optional route planning and precise weather forecasting” (xclusiveyachts.com). Smart systems can manage window treatments that adjust themselves based on sun position, while intelligent galley systems assist in inventory management. Smart technology also enhances security onboard these mega yachts, with Launchpad using fingerprint entry.
Exploration is at the heart of sea voyages and that still rings true in 2025. These luxury yachts are now designed for off the beaten path adventures and diverse climates ranging from polar regions to tropical islands. The Serene superyacht features an underwater viewing room so guests can get up close and personal with life under the sea, while the Pelorus was designed for adventure with dive equipment, a submarine and exploration boats (adayacht.com). Of course, the plethora of water toys – water trampolines, seabobs, hydroflyers, and jet skis - also add a sense of adventure and fun.

While they all boast the super yacht standard features such as multiple swimming pools, Jacuzzis, helipads and multi-tiered sunning decks, here are some extravagant amenities redefining the onboard experience:
  1. Launchpad boasts a music studio, virtual reality gaming, infinity pool with water feature, and cinema with reclining seats and surround sound.
  2. A missile defense system and bulletproof windows provide the ultimate safety on Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse. Guests need not worry about their security when dancing the night away in the yacht’s disco.
  3. The Dilbar boasts the largest onboard swimming pool and a dedicated medical center.
  4. A spectacular circular staircase with steps that change color is the highlight of the Dubai. It also has a squash court, cinema and submarine.
  5. The Serene features a multi-deck water slide, submarine, and snow room (yes, you read that correctly)
  6. Hollywood meets the high seas on the Rising Sun, originally built for David Geffen. Enjoy a movie theater, wine cellar, and basketball court on board.
  7. A concert hall for a 50-member orchestra is the heart of the Al Said super yacht. Prefer movies over music? Then indulge in the onboard 50-seat cinema.

All aboard!
