Before They Were Famous

Before they created LA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, Sao Paulo’s Ibrapuera Park or London’s Gherkin building, these famous architects spent their early years at internships, pursuing various (non-architectural) professions, and working in diverse fields.

After emigrating to Los Angeles, Frank Gehry got a job driving a delivery truck while studying at LA City College. While at college he tried his hand at radio announcing and chemical engineering and served in the US Army before pursuing his true passion, architecture. He’s since created landmarks around the globe.

First working at his father’s typography house and then as an unpaid intern at an architectural firm, Oscar Niemeyer’s talents were soon realized, and he went on to became one of the prominent leaders in the development of modern architecture.

Before he designed London’s iconic Gherkin building, Apple Park in Cupertino, and Beijing Airport, Norman Foster was a junior clerk in Manchester, England’s Treasury Department and served in the UK Royal Airforce.

Meet SweisKoss’ own summer intern, architect student Artemisa Gjergo.

Born and raised in Albania, Artemisa moved to the U.S. to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture at Woodbury University, where she was awarded Outstanding Student of the Year and made the Dean’s List. Prior to her internship at SweisKloss, she gained practical hands-on experience working as a residential design assistant at Openhaus. Artemisa came to us through her mentor, Cynthia Kraus, current Construction Project Manager at SweisKloss and former owner of Openhaus.

At SweisKloss, Artemisa has had the opportunity to assist on a variety of projects ranging from a Spanish Revival renovation to a contemporary residential new build. She works alongside the designers and project managers on design drawings learning new technology software, liaising with vendors on sourcing and selecting materials and participating in client meetings. “Working at SweisKloss, I’ve learned the importance of communication and collaboration in a larger team.”

Artemisa’s design ethos and sensibilities align with SK’s holistic approach to the built environment. “I’m attracted to finding sustainable solutions to big city living and designing spaces that are more than just investment products and represent the people.” She sees design as a means of solving problems and has a keen eye for balancing sustainability with functionality and beauty, especially in small spaces.

When not working or studying, Artemisa loves spending time outside, especially by the water whether its biking or walking along the LA River or relaxing at the beach. She also enjoys exploring LA’s food scene.

We’re lucky to have her join our team this summer and look forward to watching and cultivating her architecture career. Who knows what innovative designs this budding architect will go on to create in her future endeavors?
