This coming Monday is Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer. For many, it means backyard barbecues, alfresco dining and lounging under the stars.
The SweisKloss-designed outdoor kitchen and dining area at this charming Carthay Square Spanish-style home makes entertaining a breeze.
The homeowners wanted an outdoor space in their backyard that would be ideal for entertaining year-round. The challenges we faced were the dramatic elevation change between the backyard and the main house, a very small space in which to design for a variety of functions, and creating a design that is fun yet sensitive to the original architecture.
We raised the patio to be at the same level of the main house ensuring a safe and continuous transition to the outdoor dining area. French doors create a seamless flow from indoors to outdoors. A later step down at the lawn provides access to the backyard.
Having the ability to prepare and to cook food without leaving the party was the primary objective of this outdoor kitchen. A built-in grill, counterspace, a sink and a beverage cooler were included. Guests can keep the chef company from the bar stool seating at the countertop or lounge area under the pergola.
The pergola allows the homeowners to spend more time relaxing outside in comfort, providing a respite from the sun and offering wind protection. Perennials fabric-covered drapery makes the space feel intimate while the fireplace extends the enjoyment of the night.
The fireplace creates ambiance, warmth and coziness while the water feature adds a touch of serenity and calm to the outdoor oasis.
Keep the party going all night with outdoor lighting. Wall sconces and pendant lights diffuse light and create a warm glow that allows the moonlight to be center stage. Downward lights and large floor lanterns also illuminate the ground combining safety and style.
In keeping with the Spanish style, vibrant tiles with intricate geometric patterns compliment the colorful turquoise countertops. Along with the bright yellow bar stools, they create a fun pop of color against the natural-colored stone.
Hapy Memorial Day!
