SweisKloss, in collaboration with SunWest Fabrication, designed and fabricated this striking spiral staircase that elegantly blends functionality and aesthetics to create a sculptural focal point at this custom-built residential home in Sunset Park.
A “look” that inspired the design

While building her dream home, the client expressed her wish for a curvilinear staircase. Working closely with the fabricators, the design team explored several iterations to achieve a form that was both visually elegant and fully code-compliant. Constructed primarily of concrete and steel, it was finished with Benjamin Moore’s Black Beauty paint, enhancing its bold architectural presence.

Installing the staircase was an engineering feat unto itself!
It took a crane, ropes, and a bit of muscle to set the staircase in place by lifting it through a temporary roof opening and then carefully positioning and anchoring it to the living room floor.
Suspended above, a dramatic hanging light fixture compliments the graceful curves of the staircase and draws the eye upwards. Bocci’s 21 series features 19 pendants crafted from thin porcelain sheets that are shaped into intricate organic forms (bocci.com). The natural unfrosted exterior porcelain diffuses light, while the clustered arrangement of varying lengths creates a layered sculptural composition. The fixture’s delicate material and warm glow provide a subtle contrast to the staircase’s dark steel structure.
For both ambience and safety, the interior handrail incorporates concealed lighting within a channel to help illuminate the stair path.
Along the staircase, a recessed lighted wall niche offers a dedicated space for displaying artwork, further reinforcing the home’s integration of architecture, art, and design.
This one-of-a-kind staircase truly is a statement piece.
